About Penicillin V
Penicillin V is a widely prescribed antibiotic, essential for combating many common bacterial infections. If you've been prescribed this vital medication, TheDrugClub offers an incredible opportunity to get it without the usual financial strain. ### What it Treats Penicillin V, also known as penicillin VK, is a trusted antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It's commonly prescribed for conditions like strep throat, certain skin infections (such as impetigo or erysipelas), mild-to-moderate ear infections (otitis media), and even to prevent rheumatic fever. Your doctor may also prescribe it for other specific bacterial infections, always based on a proper diagnosis. It's important to remember that penicillin V is effective only against bacterial infections and will not work for viral illnesses like the common cold or flu. ### How it Works This powerful antibiotic belongs to the penicillin class, a group of drugs known as beta-lactam antibiotics. Its mechanism of action is quite clever: penicillin V works by interfering with the formation of bacterial cell walls. Bacteria need strong cell walls to survive and multiply. By disrupting this crucial process, penicillin V essentially weakens the bacteria, causing them to burst and die. This targeted approach helps clear up infections and allows your body to recover. Always complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor, even if you start feeling better, to ensure all bacteria are eliminated and to prevent antibiotic resistance. ### Typical Costs The cost of penicillin V can vary significantly depending on your pharmacy, dosage, and whether you have insurance. Without insurance, a typical prescription might range from $20 to $50, sometimes more. Even with insurance, you often face a co-pay, which can still add up, especially if you need multiple prescriptions

What Penicillin V is approved for (FDA label)
Penicillin V potassium tablets and penicillin V potassium for oral solution are indicated in the treatment of mild to moderately severe infections due to penicillin G-sensitive microorganisms. Therapy should be guided by bacteriological studies (including sensitivity tests) and by clinical response. NOTE: Severe pneumonia, empyema, bacteremia, pericarditis, meningitis, and arthritis should not be treated with penicillin V during the acute stage. Indicated surgical procedures should be performed. The following infections will usually respond to adequate dosage of penicillin V. Streptococcal infections (without bacteremia). Mild-to-moderate infections of the upper respiratory tract, scarlet fever, and mild erysipelas. NOTE: Streptococci in groups A, C, G, H, L, and M are very sensitive to penicillin. Other groups, including group D (enterococcus), are resistant.

Adverse reactions for Penicillin V (FDA label)
Although the incidence of reactions to oral penicillins has been reported with much less frequency than following parenteral therapy, it should be remembered that all degrees of hypersensitivity, including fatal anaphylaxis, have been reported with oral penicillin. The most common reactions to oral penicillin are nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and black hairy tongue. The hypersensitivity reactions reported are skin eruptions (maculopapular to exfoliative dermatitis), urticaria and other serum-sicknesslike reactions, laryngeal edema, and anaphylaxis. Fever and eosinophilia may frequently be the only reaction observed. Hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, neuropathy, and nephropathy are infrequent reactions and usually associated with high doses of parenteral penicillin. To report SUSPECTED ADVERSE REACTIONS, contact Teva at 1-888-838-2872 or FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch.
