About Phenazopyridine

Phenazopyridine provides rapid relief from the painful symptoms associated with urinary tract infections and other urinary irritations. While it doesn't treat the infection itself, it can significantly alleviate discomfort. Learn more about this medication and how TheDrugClub empowers members to access affordable prescription savings, making symptom relief more accessible for your health needs.

Phenazopyridine is a medication primarily used to relieve symptoms of pain, burning, urgency, and frequency caused by irritation of the lower urinary tract. These uncomfortable symptoms are often associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs), but can also stem from other conditions like surgery, injury, or catheterization. It's crucial to understand that phenazopyridine is a symptom reliever, not an antibiotic, meaning it addresses the discomfort but does not cure the underlying infection. For that, you would typically need a separate antibiotic prescribed by your doctor.

So, how does this medication work its magic? Phenazopyridine is an azo dye that acts as a local anesthetic on the lining of the urinary tract. When taken, it is excreted into the urine, where it directly targets and numbs the irritated mucous membranes of the bladder and urethra. This local anesthetic effect helps to reduce the sensation of pain and burning, providing much-needed relief. A common and harmless side effect of phenazopyridine is that it can turn your urine a vivid orange or reddish-brown color. This is entirely normal and expected, but it can stain clothing or contact lenses, so awareness is key.

When it comes to cost, phenazopyridine is generally an affordable generic medication. The price can vary depending on the dosage, the quantity prescribed, the pharmacy you choose, and your geographic location. Without insurance, a short course of phenazopyridine might typically range from $10 to $30. While over-the-counter versions

What Phenazopyridine is approved for (FDA label)

Phenazopyridine HCl is indicated for the symptomatic relief of pain, burning, urgency, frequency, and other discomforts arising from irritation of the lower urinary tract mucosa caused by infection, trauma, surgery, endoscopic procedures, or the passage of sounds or catheters. The use of Phenazopyridine HCl for relief of symptoms should not delay definitive diagnosis and treatment of causative conditions. Because it provides only symptomatic relief, prompt appropriate treatment of the cause of pain must be instituted and Phenazopyridine HCl should be discontinued when symptoms are controlled. The analgesic action may reduce or eliminate the need for systemic analgesics or narcotics.
