About Risdiplam

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare, genetic neuromuscular disorder characterized by the loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting. This can lead to difficulties with breathing, swallowing, and movement. Risdiplam (Evrysdi) represents a significant advancement in SMA treatment, offering an oral, liquid medication option for adults and children 2 months of age and older diagnosed with SMA.

How Risdiplam Works

Risdiplam works by increasing the production of functional survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. In individuals with SMA, there's a deficiency of this protein due to a genetic mutation. Risdiplam modifies the splicing of the SMN2 gene, a 'backup' gene that typically produces only a small amount of functional SMN protein. By enhancing the SMN2 gene's ability to create more functional SMN protein, risdiplam helps to improve motor function and reduce disease progression. Its oral administration offers a convenient alternative to other SMA treatments that require injections or infusions.
