About Selexipag
Selexipag, known by its brand name Uptravi, is a vital medication for individuals managing Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). Given its specialized nature, understanding both its function and potential costs is crucial. TheDrugClub is dedicated to helping members navigate these complexities, striving to provide access to potential savings and benefits for essential prescriptions like selexipag.
What is Selexipag and What Does It Treat?
Selexipag, marketed as Uptravi, is a prescription medication primarily used to treat Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). PAH is a rare, progressive disease characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries leading from the heart to the lungs. This elevated pressure makes it harder for the heart to pump blood, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain. Selexipag is often prescribed to slow the progression of the disease and reduce the risk of hospitalization.
How Does Selexipag Work?
Selexipag belongs to a class of drugs called prostacyclin receptor agonists. Its mechanism of action involves stimulating the prostacyclin receptor, which is found on the smooth muscle cells of blood vessels. When activated, this receptor causes the blood vessels in the lungs to relax and widen. This vasodilation reduces the pressure within the pulmonary arteries, making it easier for the heart to pump blood through the lungs. By improving blood flow and reducing strain on the heart, selexipag helps to alleviate PAH symptoms and improve overall exercise capacity.
Typical Costs of Selexipag
As a specialized medication for a rare condition, selexipag is typically very expensive. Without insurance or significant discounts, the monthly cost can range from several thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the dosage and the pharmacy. These high costs can be a significant barrier for patients, making it essential to explore all available avenues for financial assistance and savings.
