Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) is a rare but progressive disease characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries leading from the heart to the lungs. This condition can lead to shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, and can severely impact quality of life. Treprostinil is a lifeline for many PAH patients, working to alleviate symptoms and improve exercise capacity.
How Treprostinil Works
Treprostinil is a synthetic prostacyclin analog. Prostacyclin is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to relax and widen blood vessels. For individuals with PAH, there's often an imbalance in these natural vasodilators. By mimicking prostacyclin, treprostinil helps to dilate the pulmonary arteries, reducing the pressure in the lungs and making it easier for the heart to pump blood. This improved blood flow can significantly reduce the strain on the heart and enhance the patient's overall well-being. Treprostinil can be administered in various forms, including inhaled, subcutaneous, or intravenous, depending on the patient's specific needs and the severity of their condition.
Understanding Typical Costs
