Not Ready to Fill Yet? How to Keep a Prescription on File Until You Need It
· 2 min read
You can often ask a pharmacy to hold a prescription without filling it. Here's what to ask so it's still there, and still valid, when you need it.
Short answer: If you get a prescription you don't need right away, you can ask the pharmacy to keep it on file without filling it. Ask how long it stays valid, how to request it later, and write down the details so you can find it when you're ready.
When this comes up
- A backup prescription your prescriber wants you to have
- A medicine you'll start after a procedure or on a later date
- A new prescription that arrived while you still have supply
What to say
"Please keep this prescription on file but don't fill it yet. I'll call when I need it."
Five things to ask
- "How long will this prescription stay valid?"
- "What Rx number should I use when I'm ready?"
- "Will it be filled automatically if I'm on auto-refill?" (Ask them to keep it off.)
- "Will you text me about it?" (So you're not surprised by a ready alert.)
- "If I need it on a weekend, can I request it the usual way?"
Write it down
Add a line to your medication list: medicine, pharmacy, Rx number, and the date it expires. When you're ready, request it like any refill. See requesting a refill so it's ready.
Understand the status
The pharmacy's app may show the prescription as on hold. That's expected. Our guide to pharmacy status messages explains the wording.
Before you need it
When the day comes, request it a few days ahead and ask for the price before you pay. If it's close to the date on the label, ask whether it can still be filled. See reading your bottle label.
On-file checklist
- Pharmacy asked to keep it on file, not fill
- Valid-until date noted
- Rx number written down
- Auto-refill kept off for this prescription
- Reminder set before the expiration date
