Pharmacy Status Messages Explained: Ready, On Hold, Waiting on Prescriber, and More
· 2 min read
What common pharmacy text and app statuses usually mean, and the one question to ask for each so your prescription keeps moving.
Short answer: Pharmacy texts and app statuses are short, and the wording varies by pharmacy. Use them as a cue to act: if a status means the prescription is stuck, call the pharmacy and ask what is needed and who needs to do it.
"Received" or "In progress"
Usually means: the pharmacy has the prescription and is working on it.
Ask: "When will it be ready?" if you need it by a certain time.
"Ready for pickup"
Usually means: the prescription is filled and waiting at the counter.
Ask: "How long will you hold it?" Pharmacies don't keep filled prescriptions forever. Bring your member card details if you're a member, and confirm the price before you pay.
"On hold"
Usually means: the pharmacy has the prescription on file but isn't filling it yet. That may be because you asked them to wait, it's too soon to refill, or something needs attention.
Ask: "Why is it on hold, and what would get it filled?"
"Waiting on prescriber" or "Contacting your doctor"
Usually means: the pharmacy needs something from your prescriber, often a renewal or a clarification.
Ask: "What exactly did you ask for, and when?" Then call your prescriber's office to let them know. Our guide to renewals has the steps.
"Out of stock" or "Ordered"
Usually means: the pharmacy doesn't have enough on hand.
Ask: "When do you expect it?" See what to ask when the pharmacy is out of stock.
"Action needed" or "Please call us"
Usually means: the pharmacy needs information from you, such as a date of birth, a payment choice, or a question for the pharmacist.
Ask: "What do you need from me?"
No message at all
If you expected a prescription and heard nothing, call. See the pharmacy says it never got your prescription.
