Out of Refills: How to Get a Prescription Renewed Without a Gap

· 2 min read

Zero refills left or a prescription near its end date? Here is how renewals work, who does what, and when to start so you do not run out.

Short answer: When your label shows 0 refills left, or the prescription is close to its end date, you need a new authorization from your prescriber, often called a renewal. Start while you still have several days of medicine left. You can ask the pharmacy to request it, or call your prescriber's office yourself.

How to know you are out, or about to be

Two clocks: refills left and the end date

A prescription can run out two ways: you use all the refills, or it reaches its end date even with refills left. Either way, you need a renewal. See refills left but no refill.

Who does what

How early to start

Start when you have about a week of medicine left. Offices can take a few days to respond, especially before weekends and holidays.

What to say

To the pharmacy: "My prescription for [drug and strength], Rx number [number], has no refills left. Can you send a renewal request to [prescriber]?"

To the office: "I'm calling to request a renewal for [drug and strength]. Please send it to [pharmacy name and location]."

After the renewal arrives

Ask the pharmacy to confirm it received the new prescription, then confirm the price before it is filled. Update your medication list.

Family and household

Keep a list of refill dates for each person in one place, so one person's renewal does not get missed.

Where membership fits

The Drug Club does not renew prescriptions. Renewals come from your prescriber. Once you have a valid prescription, check whether it is eligible on the Medications page. Eligible medications are $0 with membership.

What not to do

Do not stretch, skip, or split doses to make the last bottle last. If you are about to run out, tell the pharmacist and your prescriber's office.
