The Pharmacy Says It Never Got Your Prescription: What to Do
· 2 min read
Your doctor says it was sent, but the pharmacy has no record. Here is how to track down a missing prescription with one call to each side.
Short answer: If the pharmacy has no record of a prescription your doctor says was sent, first confirm the details: your full name and date of birth, the exact pharmacy location, and the date it was sent. Then ask the prescriber's office to confirm where it went, or to send it again to the right location.
Why prescriptions go missing
- It was sent to a different location of the same pharmacy.
- Your name or date of birth was entered differently.
- It was sent but not yet processed.
- It was never actually sent.
Step 1: Ask the pharmacy to search again
Give them your full name, date of birth, the medicine, and the prescriber. Ask them to search under any spelling of your name.
Step 2: Ask the prescriber's office
"Can you confirm which pharmacy and location you sent my prescription for [drug and strength] to, and on what date?"
Step 3: If it went to the wrong place
Ask the office to send it to the correct location.
Step 4: Confirm and set a time
Ask the pharmacy to call or text you when it arrives, and confirm the price before it is filled.
If you are running out
Tell the pharmacist how much medicine you have left. They can tell you what options you have.
Where membership fits
Once the prescription is in hand, check whether it is eligible on the Medications page. Eligible medications are $0 with membership. If you are a member, ask the pharmacy to use your membership for the fill.
