The Pickup Bag Check: What to Look at Before You Walk Away
· 2 min read
A 30-second check at every pickup: right name, every item, the strength you expect, and the price you were quoted.
Short answer: Before you leave the counter at any pickup, open the bag and check four things: the name on each label, that every item you expected is there, that the medicine and strength match what you take, and that the price matches what you were told.
Why check every time
Our first-fill checklist covers your first visit. This is the habit for every visit after that. A problem is far easier to fix at the counter than after you get home.
1. The name
Read the patient name on every label. Households with several people at the same pharmacy can end up with bags mixed up.
2. Every item
Count what's in the bag against what you came for. If something is missing, ask now: it may still be in progress or out of stock.
3. The medicine and strength
Compare the label to what you expect. If the pills look different from last time, ask the pharmacist. Sometimes the maker changes, and sometimes something is wrong. Our guide to reading your bottle label shows where to look.
4. The price
Check the receipt against the price you were quoted. If it's different, ask why before you leave. See questions to ask before you pay.
If something is off
Stay at the counter and say: "Can you check this for me before I go?" It's a normal request.
Bag-check checklist

- Every item accounted for
- Medicine and strength match
- Pill appearance questions asked
- Price matches the quote
