Five Questions to Ask Before You Leave the Appointment

· 2 min read

Ask these five questions before you leave your prescriber's office so a new or renewed prescription doesn't stall at the pharmacy.

Short answer: Most pharmacy delays start at the appointment: the prescription went to the wrong pharmacy, has fewer refills than you expected, or needs something the pharmacy doesn't have. Five quick questions before you leave the room can prevent that.

1. "Which pharmacy are you sending it to?"

Confirm the pharmacy name and location out loud. Practices often keep an old pharmacy on file. If you're a member of The Drug Club, make sure it's a participating pharmacy.

2. "Is this new, or does it replace something I take?"

If it replaces a medicine, ask whether to stop the old one and when. That helps you and the pharmacy keep only the right prescription active.

3. "How many refills, and what quantity?"

Knowing the refills and quantity tells you when you'll need a renewal. If you take the medicine long term, you can ask whether a longer supply makes sense for you. See asking about a 90-day supply.

4. "What should I do if the pharmacy has a question?"

Ask who at the office handles pharmacy calls, and the best number to use. That saves time if the pharmacy needs a clarification.

5. "When should I take the first dose?"

Ask how and when to start, and anything to avoid. This is a question for your prescriber or pharmacist.

After you leave

Wait a few hours, then call the pharmacy to confirm they have the prescription. If they don't, see the pharmacy says it never got your prescription.
