Refill Reminders You Set Yourself: A Simple Calendar and Phone Alert System

· 2 min read

Pharmacy alerts help, but your own reminders keep working if you change pharmacies or apps. Here's a simple way to set refill and renewal reminders.

Short answer: Set two reminders for each medicine: one to request the refill about a week before you run out, and one to start a renewal when refills get low. Use the calendar or alarm app you already have, so the reminders keep working no matter which pharmacy you use.

Why set your own

Pharmacy texts and apps are useful, but they're tied to one pharmacy and one account. If you change pharmacies, lose access to an app, or a message lands in spam, your own reminder still goes off.

Reminder 1: Request the refill

For each medicine:

  1. Note the date you picked up the last fill and how many days it lasts.
  2. Count back about seven days from when you'd run out.
  3. Set a repeating reminder on that day: "Request refill: [medicine], Rx [number]."

Putting the Rx number in the reminder means you have it ready when you call.

Reminder 2: Start the renewal

Look at refills left on the label. When you're down to the last refill, set a reminder to call your prescriber's office. Renewals can take several days. See out of refills.

Reminder 3: Check the end date

Labels show a date after which the prescription can't be filled. Add a reminder a few weeks before that date.

Keep it simple with one pickup day

If you have several medicines, ask your pharmacy about lining them up so you only need one reminder. See one pickup day.

Write it down too

Add refill dates to your one-page medication list so a family member can help if needed.
