11 Weirdly Expensive Things About Being an Adult (and One We Can Make Boring)
· 4 min read
Greeting cards. Airport water. Being invited to things. A lighthearted list of weirdly expensive adult moments, plus one pharmacy-counter fix that's boring.
Nobody warned us. Childhood was full of lessons about sharing and looking both ways, and nobody once mentioned that a folded piece of paper with a cartoon dog on it would cost as much as lunch.
"Why is everything so expensive?" is a question a lot of people are asking this year, and honestly, fair. So we made a list. Some of these are universal. One of them we can actually do something about. (If you're here for that one, skip to #11 or jump straight to the page about it.)
1. Greeting cards
You will spend real money on a card for someone you will also see in person, where you'll say the same thing out loud. The card will be read for four seconds. It will then live in a drawer forever, because throwing it away feels illegal.
2. Water, specifically at airports
Same water. Same bottle. Different zip code, apparently a different economy. The gate area runs on its own currency, and that currency is "you have no other choice."
3. Being invited to things
Weddings, bachelor and bachelorette trips, birthday dinners where the bill gets split evenly even though you had soup. Being loved is wonderful. Being loved is also a line item.
4. Parking at the place you were already paying to visit
You paid for the ticket. You paid for the snacks. Now you're paying for the right to have arrived.
5. Replacing the charger you definitely had
It was right here. It's always "right here" until it's gone, and then there's a new one in your cart and an old one that will reappear in a bag in eleven months.
6. The "small" subscription
Each one is a few dollars a month. Together they form a quiet committee that decides what you can afford. Somewhere, a streaming service you forgot about is still very excited to have you.
7. Basic toiletries
Toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, a razor. You walk in for "a few things" and walk out having spent what feels like a car payment on smelling okay.
8. Anything labeled "for weddings"
Same flowers, same cake, same chairs. Add the word "wedding" and watch the price get dressed up too.
9. A haircut that looks like you didn't get a haircut
The goal was "same, but tidier." The price was "new person."
10. Being slightly late on anything
Library fines walked so late fees could run. A forgotten due date can cost more than the thing itself.
11. Finding out the pharmacy total at the register
This one isn't funny in the same way, so we'll keep it simple. Lots of people find out what a prescription costs only when they're standing at the counter, with a line behind them, deciding on the spot. That's the part that stresses people out: not knowing.
The number itself depends on a bunch of things: your health plan (if you have one), where you are in your deductible, the specific medication, and the pharmacy. Plan years also reset in January, which is why the same prescription can suddenly cost more after New Year's. Our January reset explainer covers that part.
A few things make this one less of a plot twist:
- Ask for the total first. "What's my total on this?" and "Is there a cash price?" are normal questions. Pharmacy teams hear them all day.
- Know your plan's deductible and whether it applies to prescriptions.
- Keep a note of what you paid last time, so a change stands out.
- Look at a prescription membership. That's what we are. Details below, no pressure.
So what's the boring fix?
The Drug Club is a prescription membership. It's not insurance and not a discount card. You pay one monthly fee, and you get member pricing on eligible medications at participating pharmacies. That's the whole idea: make one item on this list predictable.
- Price of the membership: one monthly fee, the same every month. See current membership prices.
- The headline: $0 with membership on eligible medications. Check whether yours are eligible.
- The list: 800+ medications, searchable on the Medications page before you join.
- Where: 70,000+ pharmacies participate. Ask whether yours is one.
- Trying it out: Try The Drug Club risk-free for 30 days.
We can't help with greeting cards. We've tried. They just keep costing that much.
The short version
Adulthood is full of weirdly expensive moments, most of which you just laugh at and pay. The pharmacy counter doesn't have to be one of the surprising ones. Ask for the total first, know your plan's numbers, and if a membership makes sense for your prescriptions, here's how ours works.
