Thanksgiving Week: Get Your Refills Sorted Before the Turkey
· 4 min read
Before Thanksgiving week, check refill dates, look up holiday pharmacy hours, keep a current med list for hosting or travel, and pick a backup pharmacy.
Thanksgiving week has a way of filling up fast. There's the grocery run, the second grocery run for the thing you forgot, the great folding-chair search, and at least one relative asking whether the turkey is "supposed to look like that."
Somewhere in there, it's worth ten quiet minutes for your prescriptions. A little planning the week before means one less thing to think about when the pie is in the oven. This post is general information, not medical advice. It's about planning and paperwork, not about any medication itself.
Step 1: Check your refill dates the week before
Look at each bottle and your notes, and write down when the next refill is due. If any refill lands during Thanksgiving week, or right after it, call your pharmacy the week before and ask what your options are. Our post on requesting a refill so it's ready covers how that request usually works, and refill timing before a weekend uses the same kind of thinking.
Here's a SAMPLE holiday-week check:
| SAMPLE (example only) | Refill due (example) | Refills left (example) | Note (example) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medication A (example) | Wednesday before Thanksgiving | 2 | Call pharmacy the Monday before |
| Medication B (example) | Next month | 3 | Nothing to do yet |
| Medication C (example) | Saturday after Thanksgiving | 0 | Ask about a renewal |
Everything in this SAMPLE table is made up. If a refill shows none left, see out of refills: how a renewal works.
Step 2: Look up holiday pharmacy hours
Pharmacy counter hours often change around the holiday, and the counter's hours aren't always the same as the store's. Before the week gets busy, check:
- The counter's hours on Thanksgiving Day and the days around it
- Where your pharmacy posts holiday changes (phone message, website, or app)
- The best phone number to call
Our post on pharmacy holiday hours has a quick plan, and if you ever arrive to a dark counter, see what to do when the pharmacy counter is closed.
Step 3: Keep a current med list when hosting or traveling
Whether you're hosting a full house or driving four hours with a casserole on your lap, a current medication list is handy to have. Include each medication's name and strength, your prescriber, and your usual pharmacy's phone number. Our guide to keeping a one-page medication list has a simple format.
If you're hosting, keep your own medications in your own space, in their original labeled bottles, and away from the busy kitchen counter. If you're the one traveling, our post on traveling with prescriptions has packing tips.
Step 4: Pick a backup participating pharmacy
It helps to know one other pharmacy you could use if yours has short holiday hours, especially if you'll be staying somewhere else for the week. Write the backup's name, address, and phone number on your med list. If you're a member of The Drug Club, confirm your pharmacy participates for both your usual pharmacy and your backup.
If you're worried about running low
If you think you might run low over the holiday, or you're wondering whether to change how or when you take a medication, please talk to your prescriber or pharmacist. They know your situation and can tell you what makes sense. Please don't stretch, skip, or change a medication on your own.
