About Antiphospholipid Syndrome
Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder that increases the risk of blood clots. It's a condition requiring consistent medical attention and often, lifelong medication. Managing APS can be challenging, both medically and financially. TheDrugClub helps ease the burden of prescription costs, ensuring you can afford the treatments essential for your well-being.
Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune condition where your immune system mistakenly produces antibodies that attack healthy proteins in your blood. These antibodies, called antiphospholipid antibodies, significantly increase the risk of developing dangerous blood clots in both arteries and veins throughout the body. These clots can lead to serious health issues, including strokes, heart attacks, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolisms, and recurrent miscarriages. While the exact cause of APS is unknown, it can develop on its own (primary APS) or alongside other autoimmune diseases like lupus (secondary APS). Diagnosis involves specific blood tests to detect the antibodies, combined with a history of clotting events or pregnancy complications.
Living with APS often means a lifelong commitment to medication to prevent clot formation. The primary treatment involves anticoagulants, commonly known as blood thinners. Warfarin is a frequently prescribed oral anticoagulant that requires regular monitoring of blood clotting time (INR). Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) injections are often used during pregnancy or for acute events. Newer medications, known as Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) like rivaroxaban, apixaban, and dabigatran, are also options for some patients. Low-dose aspirin may be used in certain situations. These medications are crucial for managing APS, but their ongoing cost can be a significant concern for many individuals and families.
