Brain Tumor (Glioblastoma) Medications, Costs & Savings

Pharmacist insight

Anti-seizure medications require careful monitoring of blood levels to ensure therapeutic effectiveness. I advise patients never to switch between brand and generic without consulting their pharmacist, as even small differences in absorption can affect seizure control. Medication adherence is the single most important factor.

About Brain Tumor (Glioblastoma)

Glioblastoma is an aggressive and fast-growing type of brain cancer that presents significant challenges for patients and their families. Treatment often involves a combination of therapies and costly medications. TheDrugClub aims to ease the financial burden of these essential prescriptions, helping members afford the care they need during a difficult time.

Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor in adults. It originates from star-shaped cells in the brain called astrocytes, which support nerve cells. Unlike some other cancers, glioblastoma doesn't typically spread to distant parts of the body but grows rapidly within the brain, often infiltrating surrounding healthy tissue, making it particularly difficult to treat effectively. Symptoms can vary widely depending on the tumor's location but commonly include persistent headaches, seizures, changes in personality or mood, memory problems, weakness on one side of the body, and speech difficulties. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like MRI, followed by a biopsy to confirm the type of tumor.

Treatment for glioblastoma is often multifaceted, aiming to slow tumor growth and manage symptoms. The standard approach usually begins with surgical removal of as much of the tumor as safely possible. This is typically followed by radiation therapy, often in combination with chemotherapy, most commonly using the oral medication temozolomide (TMZ). For recurrent glioblastoma, other options may include targeted therapies like bevacizumab (Avastin), which works by inhibiting blood vessel formation that tumors need to grow. Additionally, a device called Optune, which delivers Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields), may be used to disrupt cancer cell division. Beyond these specific cancer treatments, patients often require supportive medications, such as anti-seizure drugs, corticosteroids like dexamethasone to reduce brain swelling, and anti-nausea medications, all of which can add to the overall cost of care.

The financial strain of managing glioblastoma can be immense, with prescription medications being a significant part of that burden. This is where TheDrugClub steps in. For a low monthly membership fee – with a Drug Club membership – members gain access to substantial savings on both generic and brand-name prescriptions, including many of the specialized and supportive medications used in glioblastoma treatment.
