Brain Tumor (Meningioma) Medications, Costs & Savings

Pharmacist insight

Anti-seizure medications require careful monitoring of blood levels to ensure therapeutic effectiveness. I advise patients never to switch between brand and generic without consulting their pharmacist, as even small differences in absorption can affect seizure control. Medication adherence is the single most important factor.

About Brain Tumor (Meningioma)

Meningiomas are the most common type of primary brain tumor, accounting for about one-third of all primary brain and spinal cord tumors. These tumors arise from the meninges, the protective layers of tissue that surround the brain and spinal cord. Most meningiomas are benign (non-cancerous) and grow slowly, sometimes over many years, without causing noticeable symptoms.

Symptoms of a meningioma vary widely depending on its size and location. Common signs can include headaches, seizures, vision changes, hearing loss, weakness or numbness in limbs, and cognitive difficulties. These symptoms occur when the growing tumor presses on the brain, nerves, or blood vessels. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests such as an MRI or CT scan, often followed by a biopsy to confirm the type of tumor.

Treatment for meningioma depends on several factors, including the tumor's size, location, growth rate, and whether it's causing symptoms. For small, asymptomatic meningiomas, a "watch and wait" approach with regular monitoring scans may be recommended. Surgical removal is the primary treatment for larger or symptomatic tumors, aiming to remove as much of the tumor as safely possible. Radiation therapy, including stereotactic radiosurgery, may be used after surgery to treat residual tumor, or as a primary treatment for tumors that cannot be surgically removed or for recurrent meningiomas.

While there are no specific medications to shrink most benign meningiomas, prescriptions play a vital role in managing symptoms and supportive care. Patients might be prescribed anti-seizure medications like levetiracetam or phenytoin, pain relievers, or corticosteroids to reduce brain swelling. For rare, aggressive, or recurrent meningiomas, targeted therapies or chemotherapy might be explored in clinical trials or specific cases, such as bevacizumab. Managing these prescription costs can add up, especially for chronic conditions.
