Burkitt Lymphoma Medications, Costs & Savings
Pharmacist insight
Medication adherence is particularly critical for oral chemotherapy agents. I work closely with patients to manage side effects that might cause them to skip doses. Many supportive care medications — anti-nausea drugs, growth factors — are available in generic form, helping reduce the overall cost burden of cancer treatment.

About Burkitt Lymphoma
Burkitt Lymphoma is a rare but highly aggressive type of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This cancer originates in the immune cells called B-lymphocytes, which are crucial for fighting infections. What makes Burkitt Lymphoma particularly challenging is its rapid growth rate, often doubling in size within 24 hours. There are three main types:
- Endemic Burkitt Lymphoma: Predominantly found in equatorial Africa, this type is strongly linked to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and often presents as a tumor in the jaw or facial bones.
- Sporadic Burkitt Lymphoma: Occurring worldwide, this form typically affects the abdomen, often forming large masses that can cause severe pain and digestive issues.
- Immunodeficiency-Associated Burkitt Lymphoma: Seen in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or organ transplant recipients.
Symptoms can vary depending on the type and location of the tumor but often include rapid swelling, abdominal pain, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss. Diagnosis typically involves a biopsy of the affected tissue, followed by imaging scans and bone marrow tests to determine the extent of the disease.
Treatment for Burkitt Lymphoma is intensive and aims to eradicate the fast-growing cancer cells quickly. High-dose chemotherapy regimens are the cornerstone of treatment, often involving a combination of powerful drugs such as cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, cytarabine, vincristine, and doxorubicin. Rituximab, a monoclonal antibody that targets B-cells, is frequently added to chemotherapy to enhance effectiveness. Due
