About Cafe-au-Lait Macules

Cafe au lait macules are common, flat, light brown birthmarks that resemble coffee with milk. While often harmless, multiple or larger spots can sometimes indicate underlying health conditions. TheDrugClub understands that managing any health concern can involve prescription costs, and we're here to help members afford necessary medications for related conditions or symptomatic relief.

Cafe au lait macules (CALMs), named for the French term meaning "coffee with milk," are distinctive, flat, oval, light brown spots on the skin. These birthmarks are very common, appearing in about 20-30% of the general population. They can vary in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters and can be present at birth or develop shortly thereafter.

For most people, isolated cafe au lait macules are benign and pose no health risk. However, the presence of multiple (typically six or more) or very large CALMs can be a significant indicator of certain genetic conditions, most notably Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). Other conditions, such as McCune-Albright Syndrome, also feature cafe au lait spots, often with irregular borders. If you or your child has several CALMs, or if they are unusually large, it's important to consult a healthcare provider for evaluation to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

When it comes to treatment, isolated cafe au lait macules usually require no medical intervention. If they are a cosmetic concern, laser therapy (such as Q-switched ruby, alexandrite, or Nd:YAG lasers) can be used to lighten or remove them. However, it's important to note that these treatments are not always permanent
