Gout Tophi Medications, Costs & Savings
Pharmacist insight
For rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune joint conditions, disease-modifying drugs like methotrexate are most effective when started early. Generic methotrexate is highly affordable and remains the gold-standard first-line therapy. I always counsel patients on the importance of folic acid supplementation to reduce side effects.

About Gout Tophi
Gout tophi are visible, often painful deposits of uric acid crystals that can form under the skin or in joints, a serious complication of untreated gout. Managing this condition requires ongoing medication. TheDrugClub helps make these necessary treatments more affordable, ensuring you can access the prescriptions you need without breaking the bank.
Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, leading to the formation of sharp, needle-like crystals in the joints. While gout attacks are characterized by sudden, severe pain, redness, and swelling, prolonged high uric acid levels can lead to a more severe complication known as gout tophi.
What Exactly Are Gout Tophi?
Tophi (singular: tophus) are visible lumps or nodules made up of accumulated urate crystals. These deposits typically form under the skin around joints, in cartilage (like the ears), tendons, or even in internal organs. While often painless initially, tophi can grow in size, become inflamed, tender, and eventually cause joint damage, deformity, and even break through the skin, leading to infection. The presence of tophi signals long-standing and often poorly controlled gout, emphasizing the importance of consistent management.
Common Treatments and Medications
Treating gout tophi focuses on two main goals: managing acute flares and lowering uric acid levels to dissolve existing tophi and prevent new ones. For acute pain and inflammation, medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen, colchicine, and corticosteroids may be prescribed. However, the long-term management of tophi primarily involves urate-lowering therapies (ULTs).
Common ULT medications include allopurinol and febuxostat, which reduce the body's production of uric acid. Probenecid is another option that helps the kidneys excrete more uric acid. In severe cases or for those who don't respond to other treatments, pegloticase might be considered. These medications are crucial for dissolving existing tophi and preventing further damage, but their costs can add up over time.
