In MS, these lymphocytes contribute to the inflammatory attacks that damage myelin – the protective sheath around nerve fibers – leading to MS symptoms. By limiting their access to the CNS, fingolimod helps to reduce inflammation and protect nerve cells from further damage, thereby decreasing the frequency and severity of MS relapses.
