About Glatiramer
Glatiramer acetate is a widely recognized medication primarily used in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Specifically, it's approved for individuals with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and active secondary progressive MS (SPMS). MS is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the protective sheath (myelin) covering nerve fibers, leading to communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. Symptoms can vary widely but often include fatigue, numbness, muscle weakness, vision problems, and issues with coordination.
How Glatiramer Works
Unlike some other MS treatments that suppress the entire immune system, glatiramer is considered an immunomodulator. Its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it's believed to work by mimicking a component of myelin, called myelin basic protein. By doing so, it's thought to divert the immune system's attack away from the body's own myelin.
