What is Norethindrone Ethinyl Estradiol and What Does It Treat?

Norethindrone ethinyl estradiol is a combination oral contraceptive containing two types of female hormones: a progestin (norethindrone) and an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol). While most commonly known as a birth control pill to prevent pregnancy, its applications extend beyond contraception. Healthcare providers also prescribe it to treat a range of gynecological issues, including:

  • Endometriosis: It helps manage the pain and symptoms associated with this condition by suppressing the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
  • Heavy or Painful Periods (Menorrhagia and Dysmenorrhea): By regulating the menstrual cycle, it can significantly reduce heavy bleeding and severe cramping.
  • Irregular Periods: It helps establish a more predictable menstrual cycle.
  • Acne: In some cases, it can improve hormonal acne by balancing hormone levels.

How Does It Work?

This medication works primarily by mimicking the natural hormones in a woman's body to prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). The ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and norethindrone (progestin) components work synergistically to:

1. Stop Ovulation: The consistent dose of hormones prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg each month. 2. Thicken Cervical Mucus: This makes it harder for sperm to travel through the cervix and reach an egg. 3. Thin the Uterine Lining: This makes the uterus less receptive to a fertilized egg, should ovulation or fertilization occur.

Together, these actions provide highly effective contraception and therapeutic benefits for the conditions listed above

What Norethindrone-Ethinyl Estradiol is approved for (FDA label)

WERA™ Tablets are indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use this product as a method of contraception. Oral contraceptives are highly effective. Table 1 lists the typical accidental pregnancy rates for users of combined oral contraceptives and other methods of contraception. The efficacy of these contraceptive methods, except sterilization, the IUD, and the NORPLANT ® System depends upon the reliability with which they are used. Correct and consistent use of methods can result in lower failure rates. Emergency Contraceptive Pills: Treatment initiated within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse reduces the risk of pregnancy by at least 75%. 9 Lactational Amenorrhea Method: LAM is highly effective, temporary method of contraception. 10 Source: Trussell J, Contraceptive efficacy.
