The Gift Guide Nobody Asked For (Starring the Surprise Pharmacy Total)

· 3 min read

Gift guide season is here. Ours lists the things nobody wants to unwrap, from mystery fees to a pharmacy total that shows up unannounced.

It's gift guide season. Every inbox is about to fill up with "for the person who has everything" lists, and somehow every one of them includes a heated something.

So here's ours. It's a list of things nobody wants to unwrap this year. No affiliate links, no heated anything. (If you're here for the calm part, skip to the page with no plot twists.)

For the person who has everything: a mystery fee

Nothing says "thinking of you" like a line item called "service charge" that no one can explain. It comes in a festive envelope labeled "statement." One size fits all.

For the planner in your life: a surprise total

The Surprise Total is the gift that loves an entrance. It skips the RSVP, waits until you're at the register with a line behind you, and then reveals itself. Very dramatic. Zero chill.

The good news is that you can usually return this one before it's opened. Ask for your total before you get to the register. Our list of questions to ask before you pay covers what to say.

For the minimalist: a receipt with no explanation

A long strip of paper covered in abbreviations. Beautiful in its mystery. Useless in your budget. If you've been gifted one, our pharmacy counter glossary decodes the usual terms.

For the person who loves suspense: "the price is different this time"

A classic. Same prescription, new number, no backstory. If this one keeps showing up, here's why the pharmacy quote can change and what to ask.

For the busy household: five different refill dates

Five people, five schedules, five separate trips. A great gift for anyone who wanted more errands. If you'd rather not, ask your pharmacy whether lining up refills on one pickup day is an option.

The gift we'd actually put on a list: a boring line item

The least exciting gift of the season is also the one people tend to appreciate in January: knowing what a monthly bill will be.

That's the idea behind The Drug Club. We're a prescription membership, not insurance and not a discount card. You pay one monthly membership fee and get membership pricing on eligible medications at participating pharmacies.

It doesn't come with a bow. It's not a holiday offer. It's the same membership in November as it is in March.

One serious note

Gift guides are jokes. Medications aren't. If cost is making you think about changing how you take a prescription, talk to your prescriber or pharmacist first.

The short version

Nobody wants a mystery fee, a surprise total, or a receipt written in code. Ask for your total before the register, decode the receipt, and line up refills where you can. If one predictable monthly line sounds like a good gift to yourself, here's how ours works.
