Missed the Pharmacy Pickup? What to Ask if Your Prescription Sat Too Long

· 2 min read

Pharmacies only hold filled prescriptions for a while before putting them back. Here's what to ask if you forgot a pickup or it may have been returned to stock.

Short answer: Pharmacies hold a filled prescription for a set number of days, then may return it to stock. If you missed a pickup, call before you go and ask whether it's still waiting, whether it needs to be refilled, and when it will be ready.

Why this happens

Life gets busy, a ready text gets missed, or someone else was supposed to pick up. After a set number of days, which varies by pharmacy, the filled prescription may be put back on the shelf. The prescription itself is usually still on file.

Call first

Ask:

If it's still there

Pick it up as soon as you can, and ask for the final price before you pay.

If it was put back

Ask the pharmacy to fill it again. If it's been a long time, it may be close to its end date or need a renewal. See requesting a refill so it's ready.

If you've missed doses

Tell the pharmacist how long you've been without the medicine. Ask your pharmacist or prescriber how to restart. Don't double up to catch up unless they tell you to.
