Pharmacy Holiday Hours: How to Plan Your Refill Around a Closure

· 3 min read

Before a holiday or long weekend, confirm your pharmacy's hours for the exact dates, count your supply, and start renewals so a closure doesn't leave you short.

Short answer: Holidays change pharmacy hours. A week or two ahead, ask your pharmacy for its counter hours on the exact dates, count how many days of medicine you have left, and request any refill or renewal while both the pharmacy and your prescriber's office are open.

Why holidays catch people off guard

Around a holiday, a pharmacy counter may close early, open late, or close for the day. Hours can differ from store to store, and the pharmacy counter can keep different hours than the rest of the store. Your prescriber's office may also be closed, which matters if a prescription needs to be renewed.

Step 1: Ask about the exact dates

Call the pharmacy counter and ask:

Write the answers down. Hours posted online are not always updated for holidays, so a direct answer from the pharmacy is the one to rely on.

Step 2: Count your supply against the closure

Look at each bottle and count the days you have left. If any medicine would run out during the closure or in the days right after it, plan that refill first.

Step 3: Start renewals while offices are open

If a label shows no refills left, the pharmacy needs a new prescription from your prescriber. Prescriber offices often close for holidays too, so start early. Our guide to getting a prescription renewed walks through it.

Step 4: Ask about refill timing

If a refill is due right around the holiday, ask the pharmacist what your options are for picking it up before the closure. Rules on how early a refill can be filled vary, so ask rather than assume, and ask for the price of that fill before you pay.

Step 5: Know your backup

Find out whether another nearby pharmacy will be open on the dates you need. If you're a member of The Drug Club, check that the backup store participates first. See how to confirm your pharmacy participates.

If you are already running low

Call an open pharmacy and talk with the pharmacist, or call your prescriber's office line. Don't skip, split, or stretch doses on your own. Your pharmacist or prescriber can tell you what makes sense for your medicine.
