"We're Out of Stock": What to Ask the Pharmacy Next
· 2 min read
When the pharmacy is out of your medication, ask these questions before you leave the counter so you do not end up without your medicine.
Short answer: When the pharmacy says your prescription is out of stock, ask three things before you leave or hang up: when they expect it back, whether they can fill part of it now, and whether another nearby location has it. If you are close to running out, tell the pharmacist right away.
Why "out of stock" happens
Pharmacies order medicines in batches, and some items arrive less often than others. Out of stock usually means "not on the shelf today," not "gone for good."
Have these ready first
- Drug name, strength, form, and quantity
- Rx number from the label
- How many days of medicine you have left
Question 1: "When do you expect it back?"
Ask for a date, and ask whether they will contact you when it arrives.
Question 2: "Can you fill part of it now?"
Some pharmacies can fill part of a prescription now and the rest later. Ask how that works and what each part will cost before they fill it.
Question 3: "Does another location have it?"
Another location may have it in stock. If you are a member of The Drug Club, make sure the other location participates. See how to confirm your pharmacy.
What not to do while you wait
Do not stretch, skip, or split doses to make a supply last, and do not take someone else's medicine. If you are running low, tell the pharmacist or call your prescriber.
If the pharmacist mentions an alternative
Only your prescriber can change your prescription. If the pharmacist suggests an alternative, they may need to contact your prescriber. Let them handle it, and ask what the new fill will cost before it is dispensed.
Where membership fits
The Drug Club works with 70,000+ pharmacies, so you may have other participating stores nearby. Check your medication on the Medications page. Eligible medications are $0 with membership.
