The Sandwich Generation: Juggling Your Kids' and Your Parents' Prescriptions

· 3 min read

Juggling your kids' and your parents' prescriptions? One med list per person, a refill calendar, and privacy basics so everyone stays organized.

If you're part of the sandwich generation, you're the filling: kids on one side, parents on the other, and you in the middle holding three phones, two permission slips, and somebody's pharmacy receipt. Prescriptions for several people across two generations can turn into a full-time logistics job.

This post is a simple system for keeping it all straight. It's general information, not medical or legal advice. Your family's prescribers and pharmacists are the best people to ask about each person's prescriptions.

Step 1: One medication list per person

It's tempting to keep one giant list for the whole family. Separate lists work better: one page per person, so nothing gets mixed up at the counter or the appointment. For each person, note:

Our guide to keeping a one-page medication list has a format you can copy. If two people in the house share a name, see our tips for same-name household prescriptions.

Step 2: A shared refill calendar

One calendar with everyone's refill dates on it helps you see crowded weeks coming. Here's a SAMPLE:

SAMPLE (example only)PersonRefill due (example)Pharmacy (example)
Medication A (example)Your parentNov 10Example Pharmacy
Medication B (example)YouNov 12Example Pharmacy
Medication C (example)Your teenNov 20Example Pharmacy

Everything in this SAMPLE table is made up. If several refills land close together, you can ask the pharmacist whether they can be lined up. Our post on one pickup day explains how.

Step 3: Privacy and permission basics

Here's the part that's easy to skip. Each adult, including your parents and any grown kids, manages their own prescription records or decides who can help. Being family doesn't automatically mean you can pick up, discuss, or manage someone else's prescriptions.

If your parent wants help, have that conversation with them first, then talk with the pharmacy together. Our caregiver guide to prescription costs has more on helping someone else.

Step 4: Bring questions to the pharmacist

The pharmacist can be your best teammate. Questions to try:

And please don't change how anyone takes a medication without talking to their prescriber or pharmacist first.

How a Family membership fits

The Drug Club is a prescription membership, not insurance and not a discount card. A Family membership is one monthly price for your household, with member pricing on eligible medications at participating pharmacies.

The short version

One list per person, one shared refill calendar, permission from each adult before you help, and questions for the pharmacist. For anything about a medication itself, talk to the prescriber or pharmacist. You're still the filling in the sandwich, but now you've got a plan.
