Caregiver Guide: Helping Manage Someone Else's Prescriptions and Costs
· 2 min read
A step-by-step caregiver checklist for organizing a parent's or partner's prescriptions, refills, and pharmacy visits, and checking whether a membership fits.
Short answer: Start with a complete, current medication list for the person you care for. Check each medication on The Drug Club's Medications page, confirm their pharmacy participates, and sort out permission so the pharmacy can talk with you. The person taking the medication generally needs to be the member, or part of a Family plan in the same household.
Who this is for
Adult children helping a parent, partners managing a spouse's refills, and anyone who keeps track of another person's prescriptions.
Step 1: Build the medication list
Write one page for the person you help. For each prescription, copy from the label: drug name, strength, form, directions as written, prescriber, pharmacy, Rx number, and refills left. See how to keep a one-page medication list.
Step 2: Check what is eligible
Look up each medication on the Medications page. Eligible medications are $0 with membership. Note any that are not on the list so there are no surprises at the counter.
Step 3: Decide whose name is on the membership
The membership belongs to the person taking the medicine. If you live in the same household and both of you fill prescriptions, compare a Family plan with separate Single plans. Current prices are on the pricing page. See Family plan math.
Step 4: Sort out privacy and permission
Pharmacies protect patient privacy. They may need the patient's permission before they discuss prescriptions with you. Ask the pharmacy what it needs, and have the patient give that permission while they can.
Step 5: Confirm the pharmacy
Make sure the pharmacy the person uses participates before the next fill. See how to confirm your pharmacy.
Step 6: Reduce trips and refill surprises
- Ask the pharmacy about lining up refills on one pickup day. See refill synchronization.
- Put refill and renewal dates on a shared calendar.
- Start renewals while there are still several days of medicine left.
Caregiver checklist
- One-page medication list, updated after every change
- Each medication checked on Medications
- Pharmacy participation confirmed
- Pharmacy permission on file
- Refill and renewal dates on a calendar
What not to do
Do not change, skip, or split doses to stretch a supply, and do not share one person's medicine with another. If something about a medication seems off, call the pharmacist or the prescriber.
FAQ
Can I use my membership for my parent's prescription?
The membership is for the person taking the medication. If you share a household, a Family plan may cover both of you. Confirm who can be added before you enroll.
Does the pharmacy have to talk to me?
Pharmacies follow privacy rules and may need the patient's permission. Ask the pharmacy what it requires.
