Traveling With Prescriptions: A Pre-Trip Refill Checklist
· 2 min read
Going away? Check refills, renewals, and how much medicine you will need before you leave, and know what to do if you run low on the road.
Short answer: About two weeks before a trip, count how many days of each medicine you have, check refills left on every label, and start any renewals. Pack medicine in its original labeled containers in your carry-on, and bring a copy of your medication list.
Two weeks before you leave
- Count the days of medicine you have for each prescription.
- Compare that with the length of the trip, plus a few extra days.
- Check refills left and the end date on each label.
If you need a renewal
Start now. Prescriber offices can take a few days. See out of refills.
If you will need a refill during the trip
Ask your pharmacy whether it can refill before you leave. Pharmacies usually have rules about how early they can refill, so ask early. If they cannot, ask what your options are.
Packing tips
- Keep medicines in their original labeled containers.
- Pack them in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
- Bring your medication list and your pharmacy's phone number.
- If you are a member, bring your member card details.
If you run low while away
Call your home pharmacy first. They can tell you your options. If you are a member of The Drug Club, the membership works with 70,000+ pharmacies, but confirm a store participates before you go. See how to confirm your pharmacy.
Traveling abroad
Rules on bringing medicines into other countries vary. Check the rules for where you are going before you travel, and ask your pharmacist or prescriber if you have questions.
What not to do
Do not ration doses to stretch a supply on a trip. If you are low, call your pharmacist or prescriber.
Pre-trip checklist
- Days of medicine counted
- Refills and end dates checked
- Renewals started
- Medicines in labeled containers in your carry-on
- Medication list and pharmacy phone packed
