About Tramadol

Dealing with moderate to moderately severe pain can significantly impact your daily life. Tramadol is a widely prescribed medication known for its effectiveness in managing such discomfort. At TheDrugClub, we believe essential medications like tramadol should be accessible and affordable. Our members can enjoy significant savings, including a $0 co-pay, on this vital pain reliever.

What is Tramadol and What Does It Treat?

Tramadol is a prescription medication primarily used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain in adults. This can include pain from conditions like osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, nerve damage, or post-surgical recovery. It's often prescribed when other non-opioid pain relievers haven't provided sufficient relief, offering an effective option for individuals seeking to improve their quality of life and manage chronic or acute discomfort.

How Does Tramadol Work?

Tramadol has a unique dual mechanism of action, which sets it apart from some other pain medications. Firstly, it works as a weak opioid agonist, binding to mu-opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, which helps to block pain signals. Secondly, tramadol also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin, two neurotransmitters that play a role in pain modulation. By increasing the levels of these neurotransmitters, tramadol enhances the body's natural pain-inhibiting pathways. This combined action provides potent pain relief, making it a valuable tool in pain management strategies. It's important to use tramadol exactly as prescribed by your doctor to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Warnings and precautions for Tramadol (FDA label)

Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia and Allodynia : Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia (OIH) occurs when an opioid analgesic paradoxically causes an increase in pain, or an increase in sensitivity to pain. If OIH carefully consider appropriately decreasing the dose of the current opioid analgesic, or opioid rotation ( 5.8 ) Serotonin Syndrome: May be life-threatening. Can occur with use of tramadol alone, with concomitant use of serotonergic drugs, with drugs that impair metabolism of serotonin or tramadol (5.8) . Risk of Seizure : Can occur at the recommended dose of tramadol. Concomitant use with other drugs may increase seizure risk.

Drug interactions for Tramadol (FDA label)

Table 2: Clinically Significant Drug Interactions with Tramadol Hydrochloride Tablets Inhibitors of CYP2D6 Clinical Impact: The concomitant use of tramadol hydrochloride tablets and CYP2D6 inhibitors may result in an increase in the plasma concentration of tramadol and a decrease in the plasma concentration of M1, particularly when an inhibitor is added after a stable dose of tramadol hydrochloride tablets is achieved. Since M1 is a more potent µ-opioid agonist, decreased M1 exposure could result in decreased therapeutic effects, and may result in signs and symptoms of opioid withdrawal in patients who had developed physical dependence to tramadol. Increased tramadol exposure can result in increased or prolonged therapeutic effects and increased risk for serious adverse events including seizures and serotonin syndrome. After stopping a CYP2D6 inhibitor, as the effects of the inhibitor decline, the tramadol plasma concentration will decrease and the M1 plasma concentration will increase.
