Surviving the Pharmacy Line the Week of Black Friday
· 4 min read
Big shopping weekends can make the pharmacy busier too. Call ahead, pick a calmer time, try the drive-thru, and do a quick pickup bag check.
The week of Black Friday, the parking lot fills up, the store gets loud, and somewhere in the back there's a pharmacy line that didn't get the memo about it being a holiday. If you need to pick up a prescription that week, you're sharing the building with a lot of people who are very focused on a television.
This post isn't about the shopping part at all. It's about getting in, getting your prescription, and getting out with your patience mostly intact. It's general information, not medical advice.
Step 1: Call ahead before you go
A quick call or a check of your pharmacy's app can tell you two useful things: whether your prescription is ready, and what the pharmacy's hours are that week. Holiday weeks sometimes mean shorter hours or a closed day, so it's worth asking. Our post on pharmacy holiday hours has more on planning around those.
If you can't get through by phone, see can't get through to the pharmacy by phone.
Step 2: Pick a calmer time
Big shopping days tend to bring big crowds, and the store's busiest hours don't always match the pharmacy's. A few ideas:
- Ask the pharmacy staff which times are usually quietest that week
- Consider picking up a day or two before or after the busiest shopping days, if your timing allows
- Avoid the lunch rush and right after work, when lines often build
Our post on less waiting at the pharmacy has more ideas for picking a good time.
Step 3: Consider the drive-thru
If your pharmacy has a drive-thru, it lets you skip the store entirely, including the person debating two nearly identical air fryers in the aisle. Our post on pharmacy drive-thru tips covers what to have ready when you pull up.
Step 4: Have everything in one spot
Before you leave, gather what you'll need so you're not digging through a bag at the counter:
- Your ID
- Your insurance card or membership info
- The name and date of birth for each prescription you're picking up
Here's a SAMPLE plan for a busy week:
| SAMPLE (example only) | Task | Done? |
|---|---|---|
| Monday (example) | Call ahead to confirm it's ready and check hours | Yes |
| Monday (example) | Ask which time is usually quietest | Yes |
| Tuesday (example) | Pick up at the quiet time, or use the drive-thru | Not yet |
| At pickup (example) | Pickup bag check | Not yet |
Everything in this SAMPLE table is made up. Your pharmacy's hours and busy times may be different.
Step 5: Do a quick pickup bag check
When the line behind you is long, it's tempting to grab the bag and go. Take a moment anyway: check for the right name, every item you expected, and the price you were quoted. Our post on the pickup bag check walks through it in about 30 seconds.
Questions go to the pros
This post is only about timing the errand. If you have a question about your medication, or you're worried about running low before you can get to the pharmacy, talk to your prescriber or pharmacist. They can help you figure out the right next step.
