A Prescription Go-Bag for Storms and Sudden Trips
· 2 min read
Weather or a family emergency can mean leaving fast. Here's what to keep ready so your medicines and records come with you.
Short answer: Keep a small, ready-to-grab kit with your medication list, copies of your labels, your pharmacy and prescriber contacts, and your member card details. When you have to leave quickly, add your medicine bottles and go.
Why plan ahead
A planned trip gives you time to refill and pack. A storm warning, power outage, or family emergency doesn't. Having the paperwork side ready means you only have to grab the medicines themselves. For planned trips, see traveling with prescriptions.
What goes in the go-bag
- Your one-page medication list, printed
- Photos or copies of each prescription label
- Pharmacy name, address, and phone number
- Prescriber's office and after-hours numbers
- Member card details, printed
- A note of any allergies
- A pen and a small notebook
What to grab on the way out
- All current medicine bottles, in their labeled containers
- Anything that needs special storage (ask your pharmacist ahead of time how to handle it)
- Any devices or supplies you use with your medicines
Keep your supply from running low
The best go-bag habit is not letting supply get too low in the first place. Request refills about a week before you run out. If a storm is forecast, check your supply and pharmacy hours early. See planning around closures.
If you're away longer than expected
Find a nearby pharmacy and talk with the pharmacist. Your list and label copies help them understand what you take. If you're a member, confirm the store participates.
Review the bag
Update the list and label copies whenever a medicine changes, and check the bag every few months.
Go-bag checklist
- Printed medication list and label copies
- Pharmacy and prescriber contacts
- Member card details printed
- Allergies noted
