Snow Day Ready: Plan Your Refills Before the Storm

· 4 min read

A storm is in the forecast. Check refill dates, know your pharmacy's hours, pick a backup participating pharmacy, and keep a current med list.

The forecast says snow. Within the hour, the bread aisle is empty, someone on your street has already dug out a shovel from 1998, and your group chat is debating whether "a dusting" means two inches or two feet.

While everyone else is buying milk, here's a calmer to-do: take ten minutes to look at your prescriptions before the storm rolls in. This post is general information, not medical advice. It's about planning and paperwork, not about any medication itself.

Step 1: Check your refill dates

Look at each bottle and your notes, and write down when the next refill is due. A storm can close roads and shops for a day or two, so it helps to know which refills land during the forecast window.

If a refill is due right around the storm, call your pharmacy and ask what your options are. Our post on requesting a refill so it's ready covers how that request usually works, and refill timing before a weekend uses the same kind of thinking.

Here's a SAMPLE storm-week check:

SAMPLE (example only)Refill due (example)Refills left (example)Note (example)
Medication A (example)Thursday2Storm forecast Wed to Fri, call pharmacy Monday
Medication B (example)Next month4Nothing to do yet
Medication C (example)Saturday0Ask about a renewal

Everything in this SAMPLE table is made up. If a refill shows none left, see out of refills: how a renewal works.

Step 2: Know your pharmacy's hours

Pharmacy counter hours aren't always the same as store hours, and bad weather can change them on short notice. Before the storm, check:

If you arrive and the counter is dark, our post on what to do when the pharmacy counter is closed has a few calm next steps.

Step 3: Pick a backup participating pharmacy

It's handy to know one other pharmacy you could use if yours closes, ideally one that's easy to reach on snowy roads. If you're a member of The Drug Club, confirm your pharmacy participates for both your usual pharmacy and your backup. Write the backup's name, address, and phone number on your med list.

Step 4: Keep a current medication list

If you end up at a different pharmacy, a current list makes the conversation much easier. Include each medication's name and strength, your prescriber, and your usual pharmacy's phone number. Our guide to keeping a one-page medication list has a simple format, and a prescription emergency go-bag is a good place to keep a printed copy.

If you're worried about running low

If you think you might run low during a storm, or you're wondering whether to change how or when you take a medication, please talk to your prescriber or pharmacist. They know your situation and can tell you what makes sense. Please don't stretch, skip, or change a medication on your own.

The short version

Check refill dates, know your pharmacy's hours, pick a backup participating pharmacy, and keep a current med list. Questions about your medication go to your prescriber or pharmacist. The bread aisle, sadly, is on its own.
